Mission and Purpose

The mission of the Student Success Center is to provide free counseling, therapy, and success techniques to East-West university students which includes disability Services to assist students with disabilities in achieving their educational, career, and personal goals through the full range of institutional and community resources. The center ensures that students with disabilities receive support services and accommodations that permit equal access to all East-West University programs and the opportunity to realize their potential and develop effective self-advocacy skills. Some additional services we provide are assistance with time management, academic difficulties, goal setting, self-confidence, grieving and loss, harassment, and sexual awareness.

Confidentiality

As required by law, personal information pertaining to the academic requirements of special need students will only be shared on a “need to know” basis. A listing of individuals with permission to view documentation (identifying the academic requirements of special need students) will be posted with the documentation in a locked cabinet in the Student Success Center. Documentation will be kept for five years after graduation or departure from the University.

All students’ files containing disability documentation and a record of required accommodations will be kept in the Student Success Center, not in the students’ regular files.

Discrimination

East-West University adheres to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), the Rehabilitation Act (1973), Section 504 and Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972. No qualified individual with a disability shall, on the basis of disability, be excluded from participation in, or be denied the benefits of this institution’s classes or facilities, including, but not limited to, any academic, research, occupational training, housing, health insurance, counseling, financial aid, physical education, athletics, recreation, transportation, other extracurricular, or other postsecondary education aid, benefits, or services. The University has made and will continue to make reasonable modifications in policies, practices, procedures, and/or facilities when such modifications were / are necessary, to accommodate the needs of disabled individuals. The Student Success Center has been designated to coordinate compliance with the nondiscrimination requirements contained in Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Disability Services, in conjunction with the 504 Access Committee, works to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made to provide programmatic and physical access.

The University also complies with Title IX in that it does not discriminate on the basis of sex in any student program, activity, service or benefit. It guarantees students of both sexes equal access to educational and extracurricular programs and activities.

Small class size and an intimate environment are major plusses of East-West University. In keeping with the University’s mission of providing quality education, a priority is placed on giving students personal attention to make sure they are learning the material.

To assist in this process, East-West offers a comprehensive tutoring program. Extra instruction is available in every subject.
