Emergency Grant

Undergraduate students

The Emergency Grant is funded by the CARES Act and was established to provide additional assistance to eligible students whose financial circumstances have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible students may submit an application to be considered.

The Emergency Grant is closed for applications.

Funds have been exhausted and there will be no further awards.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Students who meet the eligibility criteria for Federal Student Aid (see below)
  • Students who submit a 2019-20 FAFSA by the time of application
  • Students who were enrolled in at least one course on April 06, 2020 and completed at least 1 credit hour for the Spring 2020 Quarter
  • Emergency Grant Application must be submitted by May 22, 2020

    Please note: international students, undocumented students, and DACA students are not eligible.

  • Emergency Grant Application review

Grant amount:

  • Will depend on the number of qualifying applications received.

Notification of additional grant funds:

  • Applicants will be notified through East – West University email.

Eligibility Criteria for Federal Student Aid

Provided by Federal Student Aid:

    • demonstrate financial need
    • be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen;
    • have a valid Social Security number (with the exception of students from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau);
    • be registered with Selective Service if you’re a male (you must register between the ages of 18 and 25)
    • be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student in an eligible degree program
    • sign the certification statement on theFree Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ®) form stating that
      • you are not in default on a federal student loan,
      • you do not owe money on a federal student grant, and
      • you will use federal student aid only for educational purposes; and
    • show you’re qualified to obtain a college or career school education by
      • having a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent such as a General Educational Development (GED) certificate;
      • completing a high school education in a homeschool setting approved under state law (or—if state law does not require a homeschooled student to obtain a completion credential—completing a high school education in a homeschool setting that qualifies as an exemption from compulsory attendance requirements under state law).

Grant Terms

    • The student must demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria for Federal Student Aid by having a valid 2019/2020 FAFSA on file with East- West University at the time this application is submitted.
    • The student must have completed at least 1 credit hour for the Spring 2020 quarter.
    • To be considered for an Emergency Grant, a student must submit the application form, provide a brief statement explaining the expenses they incurred related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus, and any supporting documentation (optional, but encouraged if available). Expenses that qualify for this funding include but are not limited to food, housing, course materials, technology costs, health care costs, and child-care expenses. Lost wages due to unemployment are not considered an eligible expense.
    • Tuition and fees are not considered an eligible expense. However, if a student opts to use this funding to pay tuition and fees, he/she will have to endorse the check to East- West University.
    • Although all students who meet the minimum criteria are eligible to apply, preference may be given to students who demonstrate financial need via the FAFSA.
    • All applications will be reviewed by the Director of Financial Aid. The maximum award amount for an individual student will depend on the number of qualifying applications received.
    • Applications will be processed in the order received and will be reviewed until funds are exhausted.
    • Students who complete the Emergency Grant Application can expect the check within 21 days after the deadline. Any student who has already received an Emergency Grant Fund is ineligible to submit a second application. All awards are non-renewable.
    • East – West University is required to report the recipients of this grant and the amount of grant funding received to the U.S. Secretary of Education.
    • Students are strongly encouraged to have an accurate U.S. mailing address on file with East – West University. East – West University will not be able to provide an Emergency Grant to a student who does not have a valid U.S. mailing address
