Carlos' Story
My name is Carlos Daniel Trejo Benitez, and I am originally from El Salvador. I moved to the United States to continue my education in California where I attended high school. Two years later, I relocated to Illinois, where I graduated in 2021.
After graduation, I faced an important decision: choosing the right major and university. I had many ideas about my future, which made the choice challenging. However, East-West University stood out to me from the start. The way the university reached out and showed genuine interest in me made a lasting impression. No other institution approached me the same way.
The next step was deciding on a major. Since childhood, I have been deeply interested in computers, technology, and design, so pursuing a degree in Computer Science felt like the perfect fit.
Looking back, I know I made the right decision. My professors were supportive, attentive, and truly dedicated to helping students succeed. They constantly encouraged me to become a better version of myself. I consider Dr. Injoo Kim and Dr. Julie Zhang, my mentors. They were always approachable, patient, and invested in my growth as a student and as a person.
During my time at East-West, I had the privilege of becoming a tutor for the Computer Science department. This opportunity allowed me to share what I had learned, connect with fellow students, and build meaningful relationships with faculty and staff. Some of my best memories come from the events, clubs, and volunteer experiences that enriched my time there.
I carry everything I learned at East-West University both in my mind and in my heart. The people there made me feel truly at home. In 2025, I graduated as the Valedictorian of my class. I now work at Abbott, where I continue to learn and grow every day in the field of computer science.
