East-West University in downtown Chicago invites motivated, talented, enthusiastic, and high achieving 10th and 11th grade students from your school to apply for the opportunity to participate in an intensive two-week program, Training in Laboratory Techniques- Molecular Biology (TILT-MB). This opportunity will aid students wishing to pursue careers in life science.
Highlights of the TILT–MB Program
Participants will learn to
- •isolate genomic DNA
- •understand and perform Gel Electrophoresis
- •design oligonucleotide primers
- •amplify DNA using PCR Technique
- •clone PCR products including plasmid preparation
Participants must be sophomores or juniors in the 2012/13 academic year at a public, charter, or private high school in the Chicago-land area. A letter of recommendation (preferably from a science teacher) along with an official transcript is required in addition to the application form. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better is preferred.
TILT-MB will take place from July 8 – 19 in the Molecular Genetics (MolGen) Laboratory on the 4th floor of East-West University’s East Building at 816 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
The program requires a commitment of 35 hours/week (9AM – 4PM) with an hour break for lunch for the duration of two weeks. A pre-test will be administered on the first day of the program and participants will take a total of three quizzes. Students will conclude their training by taking a post-test and delivering an oral presentation.
Students selected for the TILT-MB Program will be notified by May 31, 2013.
Successful participants will receive a stipend of $200.00 (Two Hundred Dollars) in addition to a Certificate of Completion. More importantly, participants will have an opportunity to learn modern molecular biology applications and work with distinguished faculty.
