CAMPUS-WIDE WIRELESS ACCESS NOW AVAILABLE

CHICAGO--  (March 19, 2010)   East-West University’s IT department is putting the finishing touches on a wireless network for students, faculty and staff that will stretch across campus.  Most of the system is now in operation, but when final adjustments are made in the next few days, the East-West community will have access to the Internet via laptops from the basement of the East Building to the 8th Floor of the West Building, and everywhere in between.

While the improved Internet access will allow much more flexibility in how students, staff and faculty connect to and use the Internet, it also comes with added responsibility.  Because individual laptops are not protected by the University network’s anti-virus protection, it is important that wireless users have adequate protection for their equipment before using the system.  Additionally, the University assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user’s equipment, software, data files or other property brought into or used at the University’s facilities.  Everyone must always be vigilant to protect privacy and property on an active, open campus.

Four relay points have been installed: in front of the library in the East Building; on the Third Floor of the West Building; on the Fourth Floor of the East Building, and on the Eighth Floor of the West Building.  Adjustments will be made over the next few weeks to maximize coverage area and signal quality.  Let the IT department know if you encounter dead zones or weak signals so they can make necessary adjustments.

To access the network on a wireless-enabled laptop, search for the wireless network marked “EWU” and make an Internet connection.  Users will be directed to a page with the terms of use agreement, and a request for User ID and Password.  After reading the terms of use, log in using your EWU User ID and Password as you would to access your e-mail or log on to an ordinary University network computer.
