Students struggling with the high cost of college in a difficult economy have welcome news as East-West University has announced that it will freeze its tuition and fees at 2009-10 levels for the academic year beginning in fall 2010. The University will also provide more scholarship help for students with excellent academic backgrounds and good students with financial need.
“East-West University had the lowest tuition cost among independent accredited colleges in the Chicago area for some time,” said East-West University Director of Admissions Ho Chung. “We have always been an affordable choice for higher education. In the face of this particularly challenging economy we’re holding the price of tuition at last year’s level in order to allow more students the opportunity to have access to an education that will help them compete in a challenging job market.”
In addition to the tuition freeze, East-West has also increased its top merit and need based scholarship awards to attract and retain quality students. The largest scholarships determined by merit and family need will increase significantly.
“We have benefited from very sound fiscal management over the past decade, and we felt it was important to do what we could to help students have access to higher education when they need it most. We have re-structured our scholarship awards to lower the barriers to college for students with proven academic abilities,” Chung said.
Many colleges and universities have suffered from declining endowments in the past several years. As state budgets have suffered from declining revenues many state schools have planned cutbacks and steep tuition increases. East-West is not endowment-dependent, with only a very small percent of the annual budget covered by endowment income.
"Like many struggling Americas, we have tightened our belts,” said East-West’s Associate Dean of Counseling and Student Affairs Mettha Marsalis Ross. “We hope this gesture will show that we understand the struggles that students are facing, and we want to work with them to help them find a way to achieve their goals.”
East-West University is a private, not-for-profit, and non-denominational institution of higher learning in Chicago’s South Loop. East-West is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), and provides affordable, quality higher education to students from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
