EAST-WEST AWARDED MINORITY SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING GRANT FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

CHICAGO--  (July 28, 2009)   East-West University has been awarded nearly $600,000 over three years for Project EDGE:  Advancing Minority Students at East-West University in Science and Electronics Engineering Technology.  The FY 2009 Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education will enhance education for math and science majors with new classes, new equipment, mentoring, a lecture series, and a bridge program.

“We’re thrilled that the Department of Education recognized the crucial role that East-West University plays in providing quality education in math, engineering, and the sciences, particularly for minority students,” said Dr. Madhu Jain, East-West University Provost.  “We are committed to providing the absolute best quality education in math and science, and these funds will provide even more opportunities for our students interested in science, math, computers, and engineering technology.”

With the $598,563.00 grant applied over three years, East-West will initiate a bridge program for first time freshmen students interested in math and science.  The university will also initiate a mentoring, internship, and job-shadowing program conducted by minority professionals to give students insights into how math and science are applied and valued in the workplace.  The grant funding will also be used to improve and expand curriculum in Biological Science, Physical Science, and Electronics Engineering Technology, and will update equipment in the neurotechnology and biology labs.

The goal of the Project EDGE program has been to improve graduation and success rates of minority students and improve the quality of science and math instruction at East-West University.
