EAST-WEST UNIVERSITY HEALTH WEEK BEGINS MAY 17
3rd Annual campus-wide event promotes healthy lifestyles for students and area residents
CHICAGO-- (May 6, 2010) East-West University’s 3rd Annual Health Week activities begin on Monday, May 17 with a poetry slam and conclude on Saturday, May 22 with the Race For Health in Grant Park. In between, University students, faculty and staff and neighborhood residents can participate in a number of free activities designed to reduce stress, get active, and promote healthy lifestyles.
Since the advent of Health Week in 2008, East-West University has instituted ongoing health maintenance activities and presented periodic lectures to assist the University community in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle choices. The 3rd Annual Health Week will focus significant attention on stress management, healthy eating, and health awareness.
The week of activities begins Monday, May 17 with Open Mic Poetry from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Level of East-West University’s East Building at 816 S. Michigan Avenue.
On Tuesday, May 18 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., contestants can compete for trophies and prizes in the two-hour Dance It Away! mini dance marathon. Registration for this event is only $5 per couple.
On Wednesday, May 19 at 12:00 p.m., Mr. Ford Andersen Willoughby, Jr., LCPC, presents a lecture on stress management, sponsored by a MSEIP grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The free lecture in East-West University’s Fourth Floor Auditorium will be followed by Battle of the Majors, where East-West Arts and Science Majors compete for the Healthy Learning Styles Championship in a health trivia contest.
The 3rd Annual Health Fair will take place Thursday, May 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Lower Level of the East Building. This yearly event features free health information and screenings by a number of health care professionals. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend, and the event is open to the public.
On Friday, May 21, Nutrition On-The-Go features local restaurants showcasing health eating alternatives with free samples from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Lower Level of the East Building. Thanks to Jason’s Deli, Minute Rice, and Subway restaurants for their donations.
The Race for Health, a quarter-marathon fun race for runners, walkers and bicycle riders, will take place in Grant Park on Saturday, May 22nd from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. starting from 8th Street and Michigan Avenue. Registration for the race is $5 for students and $20 for the public, with proceeds funding a scholarship for an East-West Health Science student.
