DR. DAMON ARNOLD KEYNOTES 6th ANNUAL EAST-WEST UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP DINNER
CHICAGO-- (Oct. 12, 2009) Dr. Damon Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, will be the keynote speaker at East-West University’s Scholarship Dinner on Sat., Nov. 7, 2009. The event will be held at the Metropolitan Club on the 66th Floor of the Willis Tower, with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by Dinner and Ceremonies. Proceeds from this fundraising dinner are used for scholarships at East-West University, where more than half the students are the first in their family to attend college.
Dr. Arnold has served as director of the Illinois Department of Public Health since 2007 and oversees an agency with more than 1,100 employees that protects the health of millions of residents and visitors to the state of Illinois. Prior to heading the department, Dr. Arnold was the medical director for bioterrorism and preparedness for the Chicago Department of Public Health. He has served 23 years in the Army National Guard and earned Army Commendation, National Defense Service and Humanitarian Service medals. He currently holds the rank of colonel and has served on missions to Iraq, Kuwait, Central America, South America, Africa and Europe. Dr. Arnold participated in relief efforts for hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and was honored as the American Red Cross Military Hero of the Year for 2007.
Past keynote speakers at this yearly event have included Dawn Clark Netsch, Rev. Sen. James Meeks, UN Human Rights Monitor Dr. M. Cherif Bassiouni, Dr. Scott Alexander, and former Chicago Tribune Editorial Page Editor Don Wycliff.
East-West University will be honoring Dr. Arnold with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. The University will also honor ALS genetic research pioneer Dr. Teepu Siddique with the Chancellor’s Award for Service. Mr. and Mrs. Imran Rasheed Khan will be receiving the Alumni of the Year Award.
