CHICAGO-- (June 18, 2009)   East-West University has announced that Derrick Brown, a junior Computer Science major will be the first recipient of a $3000 annual scholarship jointly funded by ShoreBank and the EWU Alumni Association.

Brown, a graduate of Concord High School in Elkhart, IN ., is not only the first in his family to attend college, but he is also the first in his immediate family to graduate from high school. Brown was selected the winner of this year’s scholarship on the basis of meeting strict academic qualifications, answers to application essay questions, submission of letters of recommendation, financial need, and community service activities.

“The scholarship demonstrates ShoreBank’s commitment to providing access to the tools and resources which empower people to make choices about their personal and professional lives that will help build a stronger community and reinvigorate their lives ,” said Marilyn Huebel, manager of scholarship programs at ShoreBank.

ShoreBank has invested $1 million in scholarships over a 10 year period which currently has assisted more than 100 students with tuition for a college education.  In addition to the financial assistance, ShoreBank employees provide its scholars with guidance and leadership to ensure the students make a successful transition from high school to college and with confronting challenges during their entire college experience.  The mentoring of the scholarship students contributes to approximately 89% of the ShoreBank scholarship winners staying in college through graduation.

ShoreBank contributed half the funds for the 2009-10 ShoreBank/East-West University Alumni scholarship, with the remainder of the funds contributed by East-West Alumni donors and through fundraising activities of the Alumni Association.
