McCLENDON SHARES CHICAGO HISTORY AT EAST-WEST
Geographer will show history through historic maps
CHICAGO-- (Jan. 8, 2008) South Loop geographer and historian Dennis McClendon will recount the history of Chicago through maps as part of the East-West Perspectives lecture series on Tues., Jan. 15, 2008 in the Fourth Floor Auditorium at East-West University, 816 S. Michigan Ave., in Chicago. The event begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by the lecture at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
“Historic maps of Chicago tell intriguing stories about the city's origins and development,” McClendon says. “Vanished creeks and woods, big projects never accomplished, forgotten ethnic groups and neighborhoods, mysterious subdivisions, abandoned industrial areas, vice districts and world's fairs, ghosts of railroad stations and streetcar lines and freight tunnels, are all reminders of a constantly changing Loop.”
Mr. McClendon holds a B.S. in Urban Studies from the University of Tulsa and a law degree from the University of Texas. A resident of the South Loop since 1983 and a board member of South Loop Neighbors, Mr. McClendon regularly organizes tours and events related to Chicago history and geography.
Mr. McClendon’s graphic design company, Chicago CartoGraphics, specializes in maps. His firm has produced materials for historic markers in the Chicago Tribute system, maps for the Chicago Boulevard System information kiosks, and all of the maps in the recently released Encyclopedia of Chicago. He recently appeared on Chicago Tonight’s “Hidden Chicago” segment on WTTW.
