Legendary Chicago DJ speaks about Windy City music and radio

CHICAGO--  (Jan. 25, 2007)   V-103 disc jockey Herb Kent will present a talk about the fascinating history of Chicago music and radio titled “An Evening with Herb Kent” on Tue., Feb. 20, RADIO HALL OF FAME HONOREE VISITS EAST-WEST

2007 in the Fourth Floor Auditorium at East-West University, 816 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago.  The free event, part of the East-West Perspectives lecture series, will begin at 7:00 p.m., preceded by a reception at 6:30 p.m.

Herb Kent grew up around the renowned R&B clubs on Chicago’s South Side.  Nicknamed “The Cool Gent,” he made his debut on Chicago radio as a teenager in the 1940s.  By 1952, he had landed his first full time job on the air at Chicago’s WGES, where he played Country and Western music.

Through the succeeding five decades, Herb Kent became a beloved radio personality at pioneering radio stations like WBEE and WVON.  His enthusiastic support of several artists, including Curtis Mayfield, Minnie Ripperton, and the Temptations, is often credited with launching their careers.

In the 1960s, Kent loaned his attention and celebrity to the civil rights movement, working with students and community leaders to provide positive alternatives to benefit neighborhood youth.  His awards and recognitions include being inducted into the Museum of Broadcast Communications Radio Hall of Fame in 1995, a Chicago street named in his honor in 1996, and his likeness on a U.S. postage stamp.

East-West Perspectives is a series of monthly lectures hosted by East-West University.  All events are free, and held on the third Tuesday of every month from January to March, October and November.  The April and May events are held on the third Wednesday of the month.
